Father, Father we don't need to escalate

Okay now comes the biggie..Marvin's Father
There are so many stories about Marvin Gaye Sr. Its hard to believe that many are true. but one thing people fail to realize or mention in the press and media is that father Gaye never hated his son.
yes, he was strict and possibly a cross-dresser, but I never interpreted that he hated Marvin's guts as many writers put it out there. they both were actually very alike in many ways. misunderstood and complicated

I agree. They may have had a rough relationship and Father Gay was very strict with his children and their fights were volatile but never did I get from Marvin's conversations or even Marvin Sr.'s statements that neither father nor son hated each other. They just were too much alike. I think when he saw his son, he saw his younger self. Sometimes that's a scary thing if you're not used to it. Plus Marvin Sr.'s parents may have been also strict too.

I also believe that their attitudes were similar in ways. for instance during Marvin's childhood his father became very withdrawn from society and spent many days depressed, and disinterested in leaving his room.
and if i can recall, Marvin had done exactly this during the time around Tammi's untimely death. people mentioned that he became hermit-like.
so in those ways i can see the similarities..

Do anyone remember the year Father Gaye died. Also did other members of the family stay in touch with him and forgive him for the killing of Marvin Pentz Gaye Jr?

yea it was 1998. he died of pneumonia.
Well I know that after the tragic incident Father Gaye moved back into house that the family had stayed in on 2101 S. Gramercy Place with Frankie also still staying there. And If I can recall Frankie mentioned that he still had a Ok relationship with his Father. Mother Gaye filed for divorce after 47 yrs of marriage. (so she was pretty much through with him). I can''t speak for the rest of the family because I really don't know how their personal feelings toward their Father was. But I must say that something changed in all of them considering the fact that Father Gaye died in a Retirement home.

While I don't think Father Gaye hated his son I do think that there was a wedge between them that couldn't be fixed. I think Father Gaye truly didn't like the fact that Marvin was singing and making money off of the "Devil's music". I also think that the years of abuse that Marvin took as a child shaped his worldview and opinion of his father.
Marvin felt that he was never loved. All he wanted in life was for his father to tell him that he was loved and respected. It just never happened. In many ways their relationship was very tragic.

I think people should give Rev. Gay another look see. He was a man who was a literalist in his bibilical interpretations. He was a man who was extremely serious about his spirituality. And he was actually correct on a lot of things he chided Marvin on. What became clear to me after reading Frankie's book "My Brother, Marvin" was that Marvin Jr., was oftentimes disobedient of his father's teachings, deliberately so. Rev. Gay wasn't a man who would compromise his religious beliefs, nor quiet his voice as the authority of his family. Not even for his show-biz son. There is no excuse to that horrible act of murder, but, I think people are too judgemental of him. The fact is, that it was Marvin, who forced the issue between him and his father to the conclusion it became.

Both men were a contradiction.
