Paranoia

- text taken from panache report-
In the late 1970’s, a prominent black magazine did a cover story on “Is Someone Trying To Poison Marvin Gaye?” The story offered evidence that someone did try to poison Marvin Gaye. Allegedly, someone put poison in a drink; thankfully, Gaye didn’t consume the drink. Gaye had hinted to his inner circle prior to the incident, that someone was out to get him but nobody paid attention to his allegations. Just as mysteriously as the story appeared, it disappeared and the mainstream media never picked it up. There was never any conclusion to this story and Gaye went on with his career.
okay we all know that Marvin's mind at one point was overtaken by drugs, but was someone really out to get him. Marvin has created some enemies throughout his life.

I always thought there was a bit of truth to him thinking there was an attempt for his murder. It's just odd how everything happened the way it did even though we knew his history.

Who knows the real truth behind his paranoia. at times Marvin had his brother Frankie walk pass the stage before he went out, just in case someone was up to something. when he used elevators, he would bypass his floor, so that if someone was following him they'll lose track of where he was going. there were rumors of his women fans jealous boyfriends out to get him.
then there is also footage around 1977 with Marvin performing Whats Going On, on Midnight special and his security is rushing to the front of stage while he's singing.

so who knows if he was really paranoid. at times its actually sad when you think that Marvin lived the rest of career this way.

Marvin never really felt comfortable going out. I think he had a reason to feel that way hearing about how celebrities and notables get in trouble. That's probably why he had people around him. He was very insecure about his safety. I know after hearing about John Lennon's murder he definitely had a reason to fear someone was gonna kill him. Unfortunately the person that did kill him was close to him.

But it's funny though: people often think Marvin did this before his death but he had been doing it for a good decade if you read news excerpts from his 1970s shows.

Saw Marvin's story on Unsung. I guess you just cannot escape a strange upbringing without some help. But, you can't help if you don't know. Like Marvin, some people succeed on some level regardless of how they were raised. Guess he just could not escape his demons. www.seasonedwithsalt.com/life
