What exactly was it that kept Marvin from getting his grammy early?

The hell if I knew, lol.

I think Marvin should've been got a Grammy since the days of "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" personally. smiley

Like Marvin himself said that night, "I've waited a very long time, 20-some years to win an award such as this. smiley " LOL

In an Interview Marvin said that Lou Rawls beat him in almost every Grammy nomination he had.. it was very funny, he even made a joke about tackling Lou Rawls and taking the Grammy ....very funny stuff. laugh laugh
i'll try to post the video of it.

Wasn't Marvin up for Best R&B Male Vocal Performance like six or seven times before he won it? I think Lou Rawls beat him in 1972 and 1977 and Stevie Wonder took the other Grammys. cry laugh

I think Marv certainly deserved more than one Grammy

I get peeved whenever the newer so called 'artists' can scoop some 2 - 5 in a single ceremony and they don't even have a quarter of the artistry/talent this man had rolleyes

But I guess the answer to the question is Lou Rawls and Stevie Wonder lol

Least Lou and Stevie were actually artists who paid their dues. Nowadays, you can sound like crap or be all over the radio and win tons of Grammys almost for no reason. I think politics had a lot to do with while Marvin was snubbed tho, I really do. It was like how they kept giving Aretha Grammys in the Best Female R&B category until Natalie Cole came along, lol.

Yeah I think Marvin was too political or edgy for the Grammys remember it wasn't until the last 5 years or so that the Grammys have loosened up and moved toward giving awards to popular artists.

Marvin was just TOO shocking for those old fogeys. He really should've won something for WHAT'S GOING ON.

Yeah I guess his sound was radical for them. Hell, he was probably too edgy for them to give him a Grammy in the sixties considering they were JUST awarding R&B artists in the late 1960s and only then, Aretha Franklin was getting all the awards. laugh

Here's my opinion of the Grammy's Marvin SHOULD have won over the years. Including of course the two he did win in 1983. He should have won for...
1. I Heard it Through The Grapevine- Best R&B single, 1968
2. What's Going On- Album of the Year, Best R&B Album, Best R&B single, and Song of the Year-1971
3. Let's Get It On- Best R&B Album, Best R&B single-1973
4. I Want You-Best R&B song-1976
5. Got to Give it Up-Best R&B song-1977

He should've had (at least) nine grammy's long before the two he won for Midnight Love in 1983. I've always believed he was cheated out of those that he did not win. He was clearly the greatest singer of ALL TIME.

Right On Terry82

How was it even possible for Him not to win for "What's Goin On". Marvin deserved more than what the music world gave him.

BTW Welcome Aboard, It's always Nice to Hear from New Members. wink

I often wonder how Marvin's life would be different if he won more Grammys. I mean think of it this way, he always had insecurity issues so maybe if the music industry showed him more love he'd be more comfortable with his music and take even more risks musically.

It sure would've been interesting to say the least smiley

You mean besides the risks he DID take? lol

That's interesting you say that but I think Marvin was always working on different things, they just weren't finished or he never got around to 'em.
