Oh, Motown is SO wrong for that! I really think that if Marvin & Tammi had the chance to record songs by other composers/producers, instead of using the same ones over and over, they possibly would be an even bigger success! And I've got another song that would have been great for the dynamic duo: "Shoe Leather Expressway". This was sung by Martha & The Vandellas, & is my favorite song from their 1968 album "Sugar And Spice". If Marvin & Tammi sang this, it would have been a great ensemble duet like "Something Stupid". "Here we go, strolling along the shoe leather expressway hand in hand/Rolling along the shoe leather expressway together".

Yeah, if Motown wasn't full of constraints, they would've been allowed to experiment. I think that was always a problem at Motown.

I'm listening to the Four Tops sing "Do What You Gotta Do" as I type this. Why in the world wasn't this fantastic ballad given to Marvin? I can just hear him on the chorus, "So you just do what you gotta do/my wild, sweet love./ Though it may mean I'll never kiss those sweet lips again/Pay that no mind/Just chase that devil dream of yours/Come on back, come on back/ see me when you can." This song would have made a great album track for Marvin. Speaking of albums, one of my favorite 60's Temptations albums is "Temptin' Temptations". I've got two songs from that album that would have been great for our hero: "Just Another Lonely Night" &"I Gotta Know Now". On the latter song, I can just hear Marvin in his "How Sweet It Is" falsetto singing the opening stanza: "Right now we're sitting on top of the world/Just me & you, girl." Another Four Tops song that could have been a perfect Marvin & Tammi duet: "Your Love Is Wonderful". They could have alternated on the verses, and sung together on the chorus.

(continued) "Your love is wonderful, truly wonderful./Your love must surely be heaven's one & only masterpiece./It's wonderful, your love is wonderful./Your love's the sun that shines and warms this lonely heart of mine." I can just hear the dynamic duo on that one! "Running Back And Forth". This song is my favorite from Edwin Starr's "War & Peace" album--a ballad that makes you get up & dance! "Oh, I'm running back & forth/I'm just looking for love, yeah." "Send Me Some Lovin'". This is from Stevie's "I Was Made To Love Her" album. If Marvin sang this, using the same track as Stevie's, it would be pure listening heaven for me! And finally, two Smokey & the Miracles songs from their "Four In Blue" album: "Wish I Knew" & "You Send Me (With Your Good Lovin')" These would be perfect duets with Tammi! I'm still keeping on with this topic--to be continued!

I was listening to Bob Seger's "Like a Rock" and I was thinking if Marvin had lived longer and with some tweaking with the lyrics here and there it'd have been a great tune for him to cover/make his own.

Bob Seger was a fan of Marvin's (and the entire Motown sound) so I'm sure they would've made a duet in recent years had Marvin lived.

I've been on a roll with iTunes! Got some more AWESOME songs that would have been great for Marvin:

From the Bacharach/David catalog: "The Look Of Love", "Walk On By", "Anyone Who Had A Heart", "This Guy's In Love With You", "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head".

"Up, Up, And Away"--This 5th Dimension hit would have been a great Marvin & Tammi duet.

"The Beginning Of The End Of Love"--This is a previously unreleased song by Diana & the Supremes, partially written & produced by Deke Richards. If Marvin had worked with Deke instead of Norman Whitfield, he still would have had a no. 1 smash hit!

"Poinciana" & "Theme From 'Valley Of The Dolls'"--These were sung by Smokey & the Miracles on their 1969 "Live" album (recorded at Detroit's Roostertail club). Other Motowners have performed those songs live as well; Marvin may even have sung them in his late 60's shows. It would be even better if he had recorded versions.

Here are a few songs that Frankie Valli did solo & with the Four Seasons that I'd love to hear Marvin on: "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", "You're Gonna Hurt Yourself", "Working My Way Back To You", "Coming Up In The World", "Toy Soldier", "Bye, Bye, Baby (Baby Goodbye)", "Let's Hang On".

And about "Like A Rock"--good choice for a would-be solo cover version & possible duet with Bob Seger! If Tammi had lived, I would much rather have had heard her & Marvin sing "I Knew You Were Waiting" instead of Aretha & George!

Oh, I just thought of something--I certainly hope Marvin didn't perform or record a version of the worst song in the history of pop music: "MacArthur Park"! In reading various stories about the song, Jimmy Webb stated it was about a love affair that went awry with him. All well and good, but if you want to write a song about that, it damn well better make sense! No matter who sings it, the song stinks to high heaven! So, I certainly hope Marvin never did a version of it! You know, one of my major pet peeves about music is when a sucky song becomes a smash hit, and in the end, you're the only person in the world who hates it.
