xx QUESTION!!
« Thread started on: Oct 22nd, 2008, 6:53pm »

I thought I'll Omit The "What's Going On' album because many people always seem to favor it. It was possibly Marvin's Best work and Most notable album, but I really want to know which album, according to his fans, came in second. cool

I really love That Stubborn Kinda Of Fellow because Marvin was finally showing people that he could be a successful artist with a successful LP. I love the collaborations with The Vandelas in the backgrounds. I may be a old old skooler but I can't get enough of the songs on this album...'Hitch Hike', 'Pride and Joy', 'Stubborn kinda fellow', 'Wherever I lay my hat', 'It Hurt Me too'.......are my alltime favorites from this albums. also if you guys haven't noticed I'm a bigger fan of the Young Marvin. smiley

HERE MY DEAR

This album was probably Marvin's most introspective and ultimately depressing album ever. Yes there's a couple songs with a dance groove but even these are subdued somewhat.

I love this album because it exposed the very depth and breadth of Marvin the man and Marvin the artist. He worked just about every genre/style of music in that album while being brutally honest about his life and relationship with Anna. The meditations on Love in "Everybody Needs Love" and the sermon against anger in "Anger" are to me some of Marvin's most heartfelt and touching songs.

It was truly ahead of its time in content and feel and if released in the late '90s or right now it'd be considered a classic right off the bat rather then retroactively being regarded as one of Marvin's finest works.

I picked Here, My Dear because at the time when it came out, people called it Marvins worst work and it sold poorly. However, nowadays, people can't get enough of it. I mean, Is That Enough, Funky Space, and I Met A Little Girl are some of my favs. In my opinion, I love this album cheesy.

Although the Let's Get It On album is tempting ( I almost picked that one) all Marvin's work is genius to me.

I was Stuck between "Here, my Dear" and "Let's get it on" myself, but I can't get over "Here, My Dear" and the concept behind it all. Marvin's Worst work turns out to be some of his best best work. Nothing is as magical as that.

btw welcome to the forum Kay wink

Well, it was between either Let's Get It On and I Want You, but Let's Get It On won. I really have no other reason for choosing it besides me being a horny teenager! j/k laugh Seriously though, my analytic mind was telling me to choose I Want You, but for some reason, I just had to choose Let's Get It On. *shrugs*

A tough question for anyone who loves Marvin. He always gave so much of himself in his music that everything to me is to be marveled. But if I had to say which is #2 I would say "Lets Get It On". That's the first album where he conveyed his sensual side while he was totally at the helm of production/writing etc. Which is why that album in my opinion changed the face of RnB music forever. Songs like "Distant Lover" and "just to keep you satisfied" to me still represent the bench mark for the RnB ballad. Marvin open the door for artist like the Isley Brothers who in my opinion like Marvin mastered the art of ballads.

One of my musical fantasies is imagining Marvin singing the lead and singing/arranging back round vocals for the Isley Brothers classic "Don't Say Goodnight". Just the thought of it gives me the chills.

Blessings

That song has a Marvin-esque feel to it ("Don't Say Goodnight"), I agree, it would've been fascinating to see what Marvin could've done with it.

Tough question but I went with "I Want You" because I think it's musically advanced and very listenable. Terrific combination of good writing, good performance, and good production.
