Marvin Gaye Biopic Sexual Healing Shuts Down Production

With three weeks to go on a planned nine-and-a-half week shoot, it’s being reported that production has stopped on a Marvin Gaye biopic, Sexual Healing, and various troubles have the future of the movie in question.

The report surfaced on ScreenDaily, which says that the film has “stalled” due to potential cash flow problems that might have been resolved. Well-placed sources tell the site that crew members have not been paid, and that shooting on the film stopped more than a month ago “because of scheduling and location issues.”

The role of the late Motown singer was originally supposed to go to Lenny Kravitz, but he was replaced by Law & Order co-star Jesse L. Martin before production got underway. Director Julien Temple, a music-feature director, cast S. Epatha Merkerson as Gaye’s mother, Alberta.

The film wouldn’t be a tradition Motown piece, but instead focus on a time when the singer spent years in Europe trying to curb a dangerous drug addiction. The singer’s son, Marvin Gaye III, spoke out against the script and, according to reports, convinced Kravitz to lave the production. But these financial problems are a bigger issue. According to ScreenDaily, an American investor was delayed in providing investments, and it held up the crew. They say Brendan Gleeson, who has been cast as Gaye’s promoter, Freddy Cousaert, has been paid up until this point and remains committed to the film.

Likely, the money will begin flowing on Healing soon, and the production will be able to wrap. The delays could affect when we finally see the movie, but if it ends up winning over audiences, this rocky production schedule will become a distant memory.

F**k that "likely" part, this should've been settled WEEKS ago so kill that noise. cheesy

More info from this article: the film's production company backed out! sad This is turning into a Florence Ballard type of failure biopic (remember when her biopic was announced?):

The Next 'Jane Got A Gun'? Marvin Gaye Biopic 'Sexual Healing' Stalls With 3 Weeks Left To Shoot

So, are we looking at the next production woes saga? We've already been through the various dramas of "World War Z" and "Jane Got A Gun," and now a situation is arising around the Marvin Gaye biopic "Sexual Healing."

As Screen Daily reports, it looks like financing for the Julian Temple directed film has been on shaky ground, a situation likely not helped by the fact that Focus Features has stepped away from the movie. In fact, money issues, scheduling and location problems actually put a halt to filming one month ago, and there is still three weeks left on schedule. Crew members haven't been fully paid at this point for their participation yet either. Ouch.

To recap: Jesse L. Martin and Brendan Gleeson star in the Matthew Broughton penned movie, based on the book "Trouble Man," that would chronicle Gaye's 1981 stint in Ostend, Belgium, where he recorded his biggest-selling album, Midnight Love, a comeback record of sorts that found rising above his various personal issues including drug addiction.

There's no word yet on if or when filming will be completed, or if financing will come together to make it happen, but seeing as how a full month has already passed since cameras stopped...one wonders if this can resuscitated. With no major distributor and no A-list stars either, hustling it back to life may be difficult. Hopefully, we'll know more soon as this is pretty great story to tell. Here's hoping it makes it to the big screen.

And the film's original screenwriter Lauren Goodman just commented. I guess the article's author corrected it because she said "I didn't write this script, they bastardized it" or something...

Sheesh sounds like this movie was backed by a bunch of sleazebags. I do feel a bit sorry for Jesse L. Martin as this was his dream role.

Hopefully one of the reasons that Focus Pictures backed out is because there's something on the horizon from Berry Gordy and others with a more solid reputation.

That's what I was thinking... and yeah something tells me Berry is watching this film very closely. Just because the film has no Motown music from Marvin does not mean that he ain't watching out! He did care for his artists... if he feels a movie is doing a disservice to someone close to him (in this case, not only his artist but also an ex brother-in-law), then he'd see to it. And I'm sure Marvin's family is also looking at this closely, Janis, Nona and MGIII have been open about it too.

I'll just put this up here for now. Apparently a 4 minute trailer/scenes of the movie has turned up on Youtube. Jesse really captures Marvin's spirit and essence in a lot of ways but by gawd this movie looks like crap. Hopefully it never sees completion.

I mean Marvin Sr. accusing Mother Gay of having werewolves in whores in the house?! Craziness:
