« Thread started on: Aug 9th, 2014, 7:21pm »

John Legend will be doing a concert at the famed Hollywood Bowl on August 20th at 11 EST time. The first half of the concert will see him performing Marvin's duets with Sharon Jones and the 2nd half will be a complete live performance of the What's Going On album.

The cool thing?

It's going to be livestreamed. This link contains a direct link to the stream on that date. https://music.yahoo.com/blogs/music-news/john-legend-on-marvin-gaye-tribute---i-ll-do-the-best-i-can-002413564.html

Hey,

I went to the show at Hollywood Bowl. The first half when they did the duets was great - but second half I was dissapointed. But I went there expecting to hear "Marvin" but it was all John Legend. He is great, but he is no Marvin Gaye !!

I know this is way late but he did do What's Going On but it was VERY much in the John Legend vein. Half the time he was looking at the sheet music as if he was only half prepared. Indeed the duet half of the concert was the stronger part but I did like the use of the HS (I think) kids with their modern takes on the material in the form of stream of conciousness speak.

He was looking at the sheet music!? Oh my God... that further tells you why someone like Marvin Gaye is missed in this world: Marvin always went by feeling, he never was on auto pilot. That's sad...and telling. The John Legends, the Robin Thickes, the Pharrells, they never go on emotion, they go on technicality. That's not soul. Now Ed Sheeran on the other hand...I think he would've done a great job with his own interpretations (not like Marvin's but he would've done a better job than John Legend).
